Part of: Google workspace

The short answer

Moving from Google Workspace to Microsoft 365 means shifting each person's Gmail, calendar and contacts into Exchange Online and copying Drive into OneDrive or SharePoint with sharing rebuilt. WaTo Consulting in Adelaide copies the bulk early, switches mail on an agreed day, sets up Outlook and Teams, and keeps Google available for a while in case anything needs recovering.

What does Google Workspace to Microsoft 365 migration involve?

The project moves each person's Gmail, calendar and contacts into Exchange Online, and copies Google Drive and shared drives into OneDrive or SharePoint with sharing rebuilt to match. Behind the scenes it also means switching the domain's mail records at cutover, setting up Outlook and Teams on every computer and phone, and keeping Google running long enough to catch anything missed. Most of the planning goes into the order of those steps so mail keeps arriving throughout.

What WaTo can help with

Mailbox migration

Plan Gmail, calendar and contact moves with clear testing before cutover.

File migration

Map Drive content and permissions into the right OneDrive or SharePoint home.

Staff readiness

Set up Outlook, Teams and devices so people can work on day one.

Cutover support

Coordinate the changeover and stay available when the real-world questions start.

Who it is for

  • A business already paying for Microsoft 365 for the Office apps that is tired of running two systems side by side.
  • A practice whose new line-of-business software expects Outlook and Microsoft 365.
  • A company joining or merging with a group that already runs on Microsoft 365.
  • Owners who want to manage staff laptops and phones with Microsoft tools such as Intune.

How it works

  1. We inventory what is in Google. We count mailboxes, aliases, groups, shared drives and data sizes, and note any outside apps that staff sign in to with Google.
  2. We set up Microsoft 365 and do a first copy. Accounts and licences are created, and the bulk of mail and files is copied across in the background while staff keep working in Google.
  3. We cut over mail on an agreed day. The domain's MX records are switched, a final sync picks up recent changes and Outlook is set up on computers and phones.
  4. We stay close for the first days on Microsoft. Staff get help finding files, shared calendars and signatures, and Google stays available for a while in case anything needs recovering.

Why WaTo for Google Workspace to Microsoft 365 migration

  • We work in both Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 every day, so neither side of the move is unfamiliar.
  • Sharing is mapped deliberately into SharePoint rather than copied blindly, so the right people see the right folders.
  • Cutover is timed around your trading hours so mail keeps flowing during the switch.
  • A local Adelaide team is on the phone when staff have Monday-morning questions.

Google Workspace to Microsoft 365 migration questions

Will we lose any email or files in the move?

We plan for nothing to be lost, and we compare counts on both sides before Google is switched off. Mail, calendars, contacts and Drive files come across, with Google Docs and Sheets converted to Word and Excel. Items like Google Forms or Sites have no direct equivalent and need to be rebuilt or exported separately.

How long does a Google to Microsoft migration take?

It depends mostly on how much mail and data there is and how many people are moving. The bulk copy runs in the background, so disruption for staff is usually limited to cutover day and some settling in afterwards. We set out a timeline in the plan before anything starts.

Do staff need training on Microsoft 365?

Usually a little. Outlook, OneDrive and Teams work differently from Gmail and Drive, and short guidance on where things now live saves a lot of questions. We run a quick session at cutover and answer the follow-up questions that come in over the first days.

Who we work with

Our story

Built in Adelaide, since 2001

WaTo Consulting was founded by John Watson in Adelaide in 2001. Over two decades it's earned a name for tailored work across a wide range of industries, helping businesses of every size run more smoothly, work more efficiently and grow steadily, without blowing the budget or disrupting the day-to-day. Rumour has it the story starts much earlier, with a young Wato on his grandfather's knee in front of a Commodore 64, learning to code in BASIC.

Emma Watson (née Dickenson) was part of the story for a stage along the way. She brought real estate and property management expertise, and a clear view of where the business could go: growing it, bringing in new systems and fresh thinking, and lifting the standard of how things are done. WaTo has been through plenty of shapes and stages since, but one thing she helped sharpen has never changed: being consistent for the client is a must.

Today it's all tailored, never off-the-shelf: IT & Digital, Business & Web Hosting, built around what each client actually needs. Over the years those areas have come together under one roof: our IT & Digital, Currency, Business and Web Hosting work now all sit within WaTo Consulting. One team, one standard, looking after the lot.

When you work with us, you're a partner, not just a client.
